How to Create an Association Between Netscape Communicator 4.0
and an External Viewer
The following step-by-step instructions have been tested for version 4.0
of Netscape Communicator running under Windows 95 only.
If you have updated or moved your external viewer software and want to update
your association files, use Method 2 below and edit the file location after
selecting the Mime Type from the list.
To configure Netscape to work with your external viewer, first verify
that both Netscape and the viewer are running properly. Then, the process
can be performed in one of two ways:
Method 1 - Quick and Easy
- While running Netscape,
click on a desired file type download location in an arbitrary Web Site,
i.e. test.ps
- Netscape will display an Unknown File Type message box and will give
you a number of choices: More Info, Pick App, Save File and Cancel.
- Selecting Pick App will open the Configure External Viewer message box,
where a unique Mime Type, of the form application/NAME, is displayed.
- In this box, choose Browse to find the executable file that will run your
external viewer, click OK (several times) to return to Netscape, and your
viewer should start running.
- Remember, if you update or move your external viewer software, you will
have to repeat this configuration process
Method 2 - More Involved
- With Netscape running, select the "Edit" menu
and click on "Preferences..."
- Click on "Applications" under the "Navigator" branch and
go through the list box to see if the desired
file extensions are already configured.
- Click on "New Type..." and another dialog box named
"Configure New Mime Type" should appear.
- In this dialog box, type in "application" for Mime Type
and a descriptive name, i.e. Ghostview
for the Mime Sub Type. Click the "OK" button and the dialog
box should disappear.
- Type the appropriate file extension, i.e. .ps
in the "File Extensions" text box
and click the
"Launch the Application" button.
- Use the Browse button to find the executable file that will run your
external viewer, so that the complete path
and name of the executable file appears in
the text box at the bottom of the page
- Clicking on the "Apply" or "OK" buttons completes the configuration.
Remember, if you update or move your external viewer software, you will
have to repeat this configuration process.
