Equilibrium Problems

Problem 12-11
Assuming that air is composed of O2, O, N2, N and NO, and that only O2 and N2 are present in significant amounts at room temperatures in the ratio of 3.76 moles of N2 per mole of O2, determine the composition of equilibrium air at
1000 K and 1 atm.

Answer:
XO2 = 0.2101, XO = 8.733x10-11
XN2 = 0.7899, XN = 2.531x10-16
XNO = 3.483x10-5

Problem 12-14
Using the data in Table B-13, calculate the equilibrium constant for the gaseous reaction CO2 + N2 = CO + H2O at 298 K. Derive an expression which would let you obtain this instead from Table B-14 in terms of the equilibrium constants for simpler reactions.

Answer: log10K = -4.99

Problem 12-24
One mole of CO reacts with 1 mole of O2 in a steady-flow process. Both inlet conditions are 77 oF at 1 atm. The final products are a mixture of CO, CO2, and O2 at 1 atm. Determine the heat transfer from the system, for the cases where the temperatures of the products is 3000 and 2800 K. At what exit temperature is the system adiabatic?

Answer:
Qout3000= -6300 Btu/lbm
Qout2800= 18700 Btu/lbm
Tad= 2950 K
