Reacting Mixtures Problems

Problem 11-9
Determine the dew point of the products when n-butane (C4H10) reacts with stoichiometric dry air if the pressure is 18 psia. What is the effect on the dew point if 100 percent excess air is applied to the reaction?

Answer:
a) Tdp= 136.98 oF
b) Tdp= 115.8 oF

Solution

Problem 11-31
Estimate the adiabatic flame temperature for a stoichiometric reaction of n-butane (C4H10) with air at an inlet temperature of 25 oC. Find the LHV and the HHV for the butane.

Answer:
a) Tdp= 4318 R
b) LHV= 48 MJ/kg, HHV = 51 MJ/kg

Solution

Problem 11-35
Estimate the adiabatic flame temperature when methane (CH4) at 77 oF reacts with 80 percent theoretical air also at 77 oF. (Note that CO will be present in the products, since the reaction is one of incomplete combustion.)

Answer: Tad = 3739 R
